Archive: The SWiB Archive

The main photographic collection at SWiB forms part of the Western Morning News collection of original plates, negatives and transparencies. We have around two million WMN negatives which we are cataloguing and scanning in chronological order on to an internal searchable database. The earliest image is dated 1924, with the vast majority being a consistent run from the 1960s through to 2002.

SWiB holds the largest collection of photographic records in the region. In addition to the Western Morning News Collection, we also have the substantial Western Evening Herald collection which we have just started to process, as well as many other photographic collections, dating back to the 1870s through to the modern day. These collections have been deposited by local businesses and societies, photographers and members of the public either as permanent deposits or on a loan basis to enable scanning work to take place.

At SWiB we are also actively encouraging people to continue taking photographs of the region today to be preserved as archives of the future.
